Outfit Ideas for Timeless, Natural Images

Let’s be real for a second…

Figuring out what to wear for family photos can feel harder than actually booking them.

You’ve got multiple people, different styles, unpredictable weather (hello, Pacific Northwest), and the pressure of knowing these photos are going to live on your walls for years.

As a Vancouver Washington family photographer, I can tell you this:
Your outfits don’t need to be perfect, they just need to feel like you, elevated a little.

Start with a Color Palette (Not Matching Outfits)

The biggest shift that makes a difference?
Stop trying to match everyone exactly.

Instead, build a color palette.

For PNW family photos, I recommend:

  • Neutrals: cream, beige, soft gray, white
  • Earth tones: olive, rust, tan, muted greens
  • Soft tones: dusty blue, blush, warm browns

These tones blend beautifully with our landscapes—whether you’re in a wildflower field, the Gorge, or a forest trail.

Think coordinated, not copy + paste.

Dress for the Location (example-Wildflower Sessions)

Your outfit should feel like it belongs in the environment.

For wildflower family photos in Oregon or the Columbia River Gorge, flowy and soft always wins.

For moms:

  • Flowy dresses that move with the wind
  • Lightweight fabrics
  • Subtle texture (linen, cotton, gauze)

For dads:

  • Neutral button-ups or fitted tees
  • Chinos or well-fitted jeans
  • Layers like a henley or overshirt

For kids:

  • Simple, comfortable pieces
  • Barefoot or neutral shoes
  • Clothes they can actually move and play in

The goal is movement and comfort—not stiff, overly styled outfits.

Consider the Season (PNW Edition)

The Pacific Northwest likes to keep us on our toes, so planning for the season matters.

Spring sessions:

  • Layers are your best friend
  • Long sleeves + dresses work beautifully
  • Expect a little breeze (or a lot 😅)

Summer sessions:

  • Light fabrics and breathable outfits
  • Flowy dresses photograph beautifully in golden light
  • Keep colors soft to avoid harsh contrast in bright sun

No matter the season, I always recommend bringing an extra layer—just in case.

Avoid These Common Outfit Mistakes

A few things that can take away from your final gallery:

  • Neon or overly bright colors
  • Large logos or graphics
  • Super busy patterns
  • Everyone wearing the exact same thing

These tend to distract from what actually matters—your connection as a family.

Prioritize Comfort (Especially for Kids)

If your child hates their outfit… we will know 😂

And more importantly, it’ll show in your photos.

Choose pieces that:

  • Fit well
  • Feel comfortable
  • Allow movement

The more relaxed everyone is, the more natural your photos will feel.

As a family legacy photographer, I have the privilege of capturing a wide range of special moments. From the joyous occasion of weddings, to the heartwarming moments of families coming together, I am there to document it all. I believe that every moment, big or small, contributes to the beautiful legacy that my clients are creating. One of my favorite parts of being a photographer is capturing the love and excitement on my clients' wedding days. It's a day filled with emotions and precious memories, and I am honored to be a part of it.

What's up? I'm Brittany – I’m someone who appreciates sunsets, enjoys coffee, loves books, and is a mother of two.
