The cooler weather, the golden leaves, the cozy sweaters, and the excuse to drink way too many pumpkin spice lattes. It’s no wonder fall family photos are some of the most popular sessions of the year.
As a Vancouver Washington family photographer, one of the questions I get asked most is:
“Where should we take our family photos?”
The good news? We have so many beautiful locations right here in Southwest Washington. Whether you’re dreaming of colorful leaves, open fields, or mountain views, there’s a perfect spot for your family.
Here are some of my favorite places for fall family photos in Vancouver, Washington and the surrounding area. Plus when you book a full session with me, you get a location guide sent to you with my favorite spots, and photo examples of them all year around. Here is a little peak of what that location guide includes!

If you want those jaw-dropping Pacific Northwest views, the Gorge is hard to beat.
Fall brings gorgeous golden grasses, changing leaves, and incredible sunsets. The Gorge has a little bit of everything: cliffs, mountains, rivers, and plenty of spots for kids to explore.
This location is perfect for families who love an adventurous, outdoorsy feel in their photos.

This sweet park is easy to get too, slightly north of Vancouver Washington. It has some of the warmest sunsets, brown fields filled with a variety of trees that all change with the season to give that ultimate golden glow we all crave. Plus it has a playground near by that we can use for bribery of littles.

Some of my favorite fall sessions every year happen at this location. The tall grasses turn golden, the sunsets are incredible, and the whole location feels simple, timeless, and nostalgic. This location offers tall dry grass and one of the most beautiful tree tunnels that cover the ground with fallen leaves from mid October through the whole month of November while the tree tunnel slowly changes from green to red and golden.

In Southwest Washington, fall color typically begins showing up in late September and really peaks around the third week of October- the second week of November, although the exact timing changes slightly each year depending on weather.
If you’re hoping for colorful leaves in your photos, Mid October- Mid November is usually your best bet. Keep in mind though, that this time of year is truly a gamble, and the rain some seasons is heavier than the season prior. So be prepared to be flexible, your session time maybe set for 4pm, but if there is a break in the rain mid day you might have to shift things around just a bit!

Simply put…
Everyone wants fall photos.
The weather is cooler, the colors are beautiful, and families are thinking ahead to holiday cards and gifts. Because of that, fall weekends are often some of the first dates to fill on my calendar.
If you’re hoping for a fall family session in Vancouver, Washington, my biggest advice is to book early.
Whether you’re dreaming of colorful leaves, mountain views, or a golden field at sunset, I’d love to help you choose the perfect location for your family.
As a Vancouver Washington family photographer, my goal is to create images that feel relaxed, joyful, and full of the little moments you’ll want to remember years from now.
Fall dates tend to go quickly, so if you’ve been thinking about family photos this year, now is the perfect time to get your session on the calendar.
