PNW Family Photos in Summer: Why Golden Hour Changes Everything

If you’ve ever looked at a family photo and thought, “How does it look so glowy and magical?” there’s a good chance it was taken during golden hour.

As a Vancouver Washington family photographer, I get asked all the time why I schedule most of my summer sessions so late in the evening. The answer is simple:

Golden hour changes everything.

And here in the Pacific Northwest, summer golden hour is truly something special.

What Is Golden Hour?

Golden hour is the hour or so before sunset when the sun sits lower in the sky and creates a soft, warm glow.

Instead of bright overhead sunlight causing squinty eyes and harsh shadows, golden hour gives us:

  • Warm, dreamy light
  • Soft skin tones
  • Beautiful sunsets
  • A little bit of that nostalgic, summer magic

It’s the kind of light that makes you want to bottle up the entire season and keep it forever.

Why Summer Is the Best Season for Golden Hour Photos in the PNW

Summer in the Pacific Northwest is simply unmatched.

The grass is green, the evenings are warm, and we have some of the most beautiful locations right in our backyard.

Whether we’re photographing your family in:

  • The Columbia River Gorge
  • The Oregon Coast
  • A wildflower field
  • An open field in Vancouver, Washington
  • A sunflower field in late August

Summer gives us the perfect backdrop.

But the real secret ingredient is the light.

As the sun begins to set, everything becomes softer. The colors get richer. The warmth of the evening settles in, and your photos suddenly feel less like a photoshoot and more like a memory.

Golden Hour Helps Kids Be Kids

I know what you’re thinking.

“But my kids go to bed early.”

Trust me, I get it. I’m a mom too.

One of the biggest concerns parents have about summer sessions is the later start time.

But here’s the funny thing…

Kids usually do amazing during golden hour sessions.

They’re not rushing to school the next morning, the temperatures have cooled off, and there’s something about being outside on a summer evening that naturally puts everyone in a good mood.

We run, play games, pick flowers, snuggle, and explore.

The result? Photos that feel joyful and relaxed instead of stiff and forced.

The Difference Between Midday Sun and Golden Hour

Because I don’t offer family photos midday, the only example of the difference with midday sun and golden hour is my wedding work. These photos are taken with the same camera, in the same time of year, but couple rocking the nikes at the top of Mt Hood is the perfect example of midday light. The couple in the apple orchard is an example of golden hour and its glow.

Midday light can be harsh.

It creates strong shadows, bright highlights, and often makes everyone squint.

Golden hour does the opposite.

It wraps your family in soft light, adds warmth to skin tones, and creates that dreamy glow you see all over Pinterest.

As a family photographer, I can confidently say that lighting is one of the biggest factors in how your photos feel.

And golden hour simply delivers every single time.

Why These Photos Feel So Nostalgic

When I think back on my own childhood summers, I don’t remember the middle of the day.

I remember the evenings.

The sun setting while we played outside.

The sprinklers.

Bare feet in the grass.

Staying out a little later because school was out.

That’s exactly the feeling I want your summer family photos to capture.

Not just what your family looked like, but what this season of life felt like.

Why Summer Family Sessions Book Out So Fast

There’s a reason summer dates are some of the first to go on my calendar.

Families love:

  • Warm weather
  • Green landscapes
  • Kids being out of school
  • Vacations and slower evenings
  • The magic of golden hour

Summer sessions in Vancouver, Washington and throughout the Portland area tend to book months in advance because there are only so many perfect golden evenings on the calendar.
